The Amstel Gold Race starts on Sunday and forms the start of three races in the region, the other two being Fleche Wallonne on Wednesday 22nd and Liege-Bastogne-Liege next Sunday 26th.
Controversy shrouds the race this year as joint Betfair favourite Alejandro Valverde riding for Caisse d’Epargne takes the start under allegations of blood doping. Italy may still ban Valverde from competing in the country. If they do then this would rule him out of this years Tour de France as the Tour will enter Italy for one stage.
So who is worth watching this year? Well last years winner Damiano Cunego is available at 6.6 (at time of writing) and last years second place finisher Frank Schleck is available for a massive 17. Schleck also has some good value in the ‘Top 3’ market with odds of 4. Valverde might pull this race off though if he can keep his mind on the riding and off of everything else that is going on.
In other news Lance Armstrong has returned to training after his surgery and has vowed to start the Giro d’Italia. He is currently available on Betfair with odds of 8.4, so people must be taking him very seriously!
